  • Valentine’s Day Reception for Haiti and African Relief

For the Love of Africa” Winter 2010 Exhibit at

Pomona’s Cultural Center

POMONA, NY, JANUARY 28, 2010: The Pomona (NY) Cultural Center and Suffern(NY)-based Mushana (fashion art & jewelry) are bringing together artists, dancers and musicians to present “For the Love of Africa”.  The exhibit features the work of Daudi Karungi, a premier artist from Kampala, Uganda (www.daudikarungi.com).  Available for sale, will be Daudi’s paintings, woodcuts and hand-painted fabrics depicting the beauty of Africa.  A percentage of all proceeds from this event, running February 7th – March 21st, will be given to Haitian relief and orphans in Uganda.

Tjokorda Gde Arsa Artha, Director/Curator of The Pomona Cultural Center, and Angela Robinson, owner of Mushana, originally collaborated on “For the Love of Africa” as a tribute to African culture during February’s “Black History Month”.  “Yet in the wake of Haiti’s disaster”, says Angela, “we are compelled to extend honor and support to that community as well”.

Along with the work of Daudi  Karungi will be Sculptor:

The Valentine’s Day reception will feature live traditional folk music and dancing.  Jerry Kwashie Dzokoto of Chiku Awali African Dance (www.chikuawali.org) and Ndigo drummer (www.thepassagemaafa.com/about.htm) will perform.  This opening celebration will run from 4:00-7:00PM.  All are welcome.  Food will be donated by Haitian caterer, La Talaye.
